This cafe is a favourite. Before ‘The CoVid’ I was to be found having brunch most Saturdays before popping over the road to cinema for a matinee. Now I’ve moved to a different part of town and the virus has killed the cinema, which was on a ventilator even before corona came to town.

Gosh I loved that cinema. A grotty flea pit of a place with rats in the ceiling, offering $10 tickets at all times, mission brown paint, and no assigned seating. Fe and I spent many hours while away a few hours in darkness together. We would always sit off to the side so as not to interfere with the other patrons. She would often sleep through the movie in her basket, waking only for the odd cuddle.

I’ve eaten so many meals at this place, I’ve lost count, and I can honestly say they have rarely disappointed. They have an extensive cafe menu and their specials are often delicious and always well presented.

Their specials is were they excel. I know this so rarely order off the standard menu, so don’t really look at it anymore before ordering, that includes when about to eat the eggs benedict.

I have a picture in my head of the handsome young men in the kitchen muttering something along the lines of ‘but I really wanted to serve another pan seared salmon with potato au gratin!’

Sorry boys; just eggs for me today.

I’ve had all the options on offer; bacon, ham, smoked salmon, and vegetarian. They all look beautiful but the common theme is: too much (packet) sauce. It drowns the flavours of everything else. You can’t taste the yolkiness of the perfectly cooked golden eggs, or whatever flavour the protein is offering. On the plus side the proliferation of sauce does mean the toasted sourdough is somewhat softened and doesn’t shatter under the pressure of the knife.

Today’s asparagus adventure was no different. Following the alliteration: average with a side of wood.

The three spears had been cut in half (giving the illusion of six) and the woody end really gave me something to chew on.

It’s such a shame because the service is always friendly and speedy. The pride in presentation is obvious. The cleanliness is spot on, and they know how to make a decent coffee, and pot of tea.

I’ll come back here but I’m done trying the eggs. I’ll stick to their specials because they are never average and always memorable.
