Ballarat Gold

I found myself in rural Victoria at the end of April. Just a few days before I moved house and office. The timing was poor for a country drive to attend six of workshop for a client. Also, it hurt me a lot.

Driving to Ballarat from Canberra is a 1490 kilometre round trip and I turned it around in 36 hours, not ideal for someone a few months off a hip replacement.

I managed to get an Eggs Benedict in ma belly though!

Just down the road from the venue was what looked like the only open cafe at eight AM on a Saturday morning. The vibrant yellow umbrellas stood out on the cold townscape. As the sun peeked over the buildings the yellow just popped more and more.

I ordered bacon because it was early and I was already hunangry.

Fè and I shivered our way though our wait. I gave her a cuddle, she licked my nose, my nose subsequently got colder.

Food arrived!

There was a lot of food on the plate. Two slices of toasted multigrain, bacon, wilted spinach on the side (why oh why?), and lashings of sauce with a pea spout as garnish.

The soft, fresh, eggs probably came from the chooks in the garden at the AirBnB I stayed the night in.

I was really hungry, tired, and not looking forward to my day. So I woofed it down. Not so fast that I couldn’t tell it was tasty.

Fè got a little bit of bread with yolk and tiny bit bacon. She was very happy.

After I’d eaten I drank my coffee. It was hot, creamy, and just what I needed.

If I ever find myself in Ballarat again I’d go back. I’d like the chance to sit and savour the experience, even if the sauce was from a packet.
