Car Service debrief

I’m meticulous about keeping my Clover in tip top condition. This includes regular servicing, checking the oil, water and what nots, but rarely emptying the crap piled on the backseat.

Today Clover underwent her 260,000km major service, which according to the service manual puts her only 40,000 away from never needing another. It stops at 300,000. I sure hope Clover doesn’t. She’s served me well, including folding delicate folds when a Boomer ran into her side less than a week ago.

I take her to Jax Tyre and Service in Fyshwick. I’ve been going there since I wrote about their excellent customer service on LinkedIn in 2014. They look after me, Clover and in return I sing their praises and drop of a carton of beer every now and then. Incidentally; both Matthew and Todd still work there.

It was just after one when I paid the bill, and started to head to the office. I realised I hadn’t eaten so stopped at the cafe on the corner to pick up a sandwich.

Guess what.

Yeah, you guessed right.

They had Eggs Benedict on the menu!

I’d had every intention of snarfing down a tradie trady sanger but who am I to argue with fate?

Clover watches from the car park

I found myself saying, ‘Eggs benedict with bacon please?’ at the counter followed shortly after with, ‘and a regular latte’. The other options available where ham or smoked salmon, and unlike many place, there is no extra charge for the fishy option.

I sat outside in the shade to enjoy the cool breeze as I ate. Being later in the day, many of the trady trade had dropped off, so it was quite, which also meant that my coffee arrives rapidly. It was accompanied with a glass and bottle of table water.

I poured myself a glass realising that I hadn’t had any since the post teeth clean glass while standing in front of the bathroom mirror.

Before I had time to write more than a few words of this review, my lunch arrived. It was massive.

‘Used a trady cliente I’m guessing’.

He chuckled and nodded an agreement.

The bacon was salty and plentiful. The spinach wilted and resting on two slides of sourdough. The eggs poached so perfectly they popped open spilling their golden orange yolks onto the plate.

Who’s got time to worry about such things when like the amount of effort it took to make the sauce when you’re hungry?

Not I.

As I was eating the man that had served me appeared with a dog. A beautifully, big footed, German Shepard. It turns out the man is the owner, Stefan, and the dog is 18 month old Coban, which translates to ‘Shepard’ in Serbian.

Coban — is a very good boy

After talking about the size of puppy feet and how Coban was a “very good boy”, I asked about the sauce. Apparently after much trail and error, they landed on French Maid Hollandaise as their sauce of choice because EB and the Big Breakfast are their most popular meals, so “it was important to get one that was as close as possible to the real thing”. Gotta say, it’s definitely one of the better packet sauces.

I didn’t get much of a chance to contemplate my navel on this visit, but seeing as this is walking (even with stick) from my favourite car fixing place, it may just become my go to for killing time place.

Lovely hospitable folks that are serving flavoursome food with a smile. I’ll definitely go back.
