Eggs Pantone 198-c

I have friends that wish to help me experience eggs benedict. This particular buddy is ex-chef so can officially say he knows the difference between a good and bad one.

Never has a road sign been more accurate

Apparently this cafe is a well known hangout for all the medical consultants in the area and came highly recommended. It’s hip, a little bit trendy, and errs on the more pricey side.

Roger* and I met for a business lunch but after we both had trouble finding a convenient park and having walked, or hobbled, from the other side of the town centre we were both commented on maybe this was the reason the area looked like a ghost town.

We decided to sit outside because it was a lovely sunny day with a slight chill. The slated wooden table and chairs boasted the number 50.

I ordered the ‘Space Benedict’ and a latte.

The description included the usual bacon, and poached eggs, but the sauce was to be smoked and instead of bread there was polenta chips.

As you may know by now, I’m always up for something new, and I’ve learned to temper my expectations.

Roger and I chatted businesslike while we waited. Our lattes arrived first. In little glasses and a lovely coffee colour. Not too dark nor light. It tasted pretty good but too hot for me to drink straight away. This would be a saving grace.

A big, fat egg and bacon roll was placed before Roger.

Mine however appeared to resemble a dessert you’d serve a child. It was piled high and PINK.

The hollandaise was rose pink. How is ‘smoked hollandaise’ pink?

The bed of creamed corn was ruby pink because the plate was dusted with powdered beetroot.

The bacon was thick cut and mostly pink fat

The polenta ‘chips’ slabs of stoggy grain (more corn).

The slightest peek of poached egg is the only thing giving any clue that this is a savoury dish.

Only it wasn’t.

This is what I image Eggs Benedict Ice Cream would taste like. Ben, Jerry…don’t even think about it!

Does this break any WHS laws?

It was sweet and gloopy and the texture easily equal to the most revolting thing I’ve had in my mouth, and at least that had a tinge of pineapple.

Roger added sugar to his latte. In a ridiculous twist of using scientific equipment in food service: from a bottle marked ‘poison’.

We both walked away agreeing we would not be going back.

That decision had absolutely nothing to do with the parking being woeful.
