Embrace the QR

Gosh I love a late cancellation sometimes. My morning completely got away from me and with 1.30 just minutes away I was trying to figure out when I’d fit food before my client left at 7pm.

I ducked out to Deakin, an eight minute drive from the office and a chance to try one of EBs listed in this article that was published back in 2019.

The day was the first one with sun for quite sometime so I took the option of sitting outside to soak up some rays. Now That’s What I Call Music Vol II pumping from the speakers and sunshine. What better way to get your day under control.

Check in. Use the QR code.

Not a shitty blue and white laminate provided by the ACT Government to all businesses but the massive one they’ve had put on a giant lollipop that covers two thirds of the door. I dare ANYONE to say they forgot to check-in here.

It’s possible, and I like to imagine it happened like this: they had a team meeting and decided this is life now. ‘Let’s embrace and brand it appropriately and immediately. Branding is KEY’.

I was seated, because said big lollipop also requested ‘Please wait to be seated’. Once settled I realized I had to go back to the counter to order. That’s annoying because the tables are close enough to each other that weaving is required. Please tell me I need to order before I sit down, especially when I’m having a bad hip day and getting out of the low metal seats takes. an. age!

Back at the counter I ordered a large latte and Pialligo Bacon. The other options are Tassie Salmon, Baby Spinach, or Carved Ham.

I also asked for table water. The server pointed at a table then registered my stick, huffed and said, ‘I’ll bring it out’.

She did and plonked it on my table so quickly all I saw was her branded sweatshirt in retreat.

The coffee arrived shortly before the eggs.

They looked colourful if a little sparse on the plate. Even the tiny plate they arrived on. The sauce a lovely zesty lemon colour with a tang to match. But why was it sweet like lemon icing? The bacon was smoky and crispy and sparingly applied. The eggs were cooked to perfection with the rich orange yolks flowing freely when cut into.

For the price, in the upper end of standard, it was by far and away the leanest portion. Once finished I moved my plate to the side and it vanished but being pulled from the table with a scrape and not a single word. It reminded me of my ex-Father-in-Law when he removed my ex-MIL’s plate because ‘you’ve eaten too much’.

After eating I drank my coffee. Hot and darkly roasted. It was bitter but not burned. It went down nicely, removing the sour taste of the staff interactions.

I enjoyed the sunshine and people watching for a few more minutes. The clientele was mixed. Puffer jackets and scarves, business suits, undercuts, fingerless gloves, Gucci sunglasses, and long dark hair being flicked. This hodgepodge of folks all enjoying meals and drinks together, but separately.

It’s unlikely I’ll go back. The food tasted (and looked) better than average, but the surly, unhelpful, and apparently completely disinterested staff left a bad taste.
