Moist with an outpouring of Welcome

I’ve just relocated to Parkes, NSW. In case you have no idea where that is, it’s and hour for Cowra (beautiful Japanese Gardens), and hour from Orange (vineyards), Bathurst is east by ninety minutes and has a great quilt fabric shop, an hour and half south from Dubbo (Western Plains Zoo). Parkes s home of the annual Elvis Festival every January and the year-round spectacle that is ‘The Dish’.

Still none the wiser. How about the middle of bloody nowhere. Afterall, Bogan Gate is 25 minutes to the north west.

Anyway. While I’m here, it’s only natural that I suss out when offerings can be made to the goGs of Eggs Benedict, so on my first full day, I ventured forth on the first day of rain in weeks and wet through I ordered and EB and a large latte.

It’s worth noting that the menu only offered Bacon as a protein option.

Being the country, the staff/owners where welcoming, indeed, the customer leaving as I was arriving held the door open for me and said, “Good morning!” Honestly, that’s been happening a lot. Even the drunk guys being kicked out the pub at 8.15pm on Wednesday evening had the foresight to straighten up their gait and offer a “evenin’!”

My latte arrived first, as is common and for the first time in a while, it actually arrived in a glass with a napkin wrapped around it so I didn’t scald my finger if I dared to drink before it turned into iced coffee. It also came with a lovely, knickerbocker glory spoon. I was tempted to add it to my collection of pilfered stirrers but decided not to.

I had chosen to sit outside under a large umbrella. The barista commented that if I sat around the front of the shop, there was heating overhead. I was wet, but not cold. I chose to stay where I was despite the offered possibility of rain wafting in under the brolly.

The waitress may have been press-ganged into working as my EB was plonked and slid across towards me. It did look good though, and as suspected, packet sauce.

It was perfectly adequate. The bread was two small, toasted, and buttered slices of Vienna, fresh English spinach, two very nicely poached eggs, and non-offensive bacon. As a combination, it was pleasing and hit the spot exactly where it needed to be. It wasn’t spectacular, and it wasn’t terrible. This Mummy Bear declares it, just right.

The coffee however, was great! Hot, creamy, and not overly roasted. By the time I had eaten, it was the perfect temperature (for me) to drink.

It rained the entire time I was dining, and every one that walked passed asked me, “How good is this rain!?”

According to Lydia, the local vet who I met later in the day, I’ll get to talk about the weather a lot here.

Anyway, would I go back. Yes. I wouldn’t be embarrassed to take visitors here, not just for the EB, but for the coffee, and the overall friendliness of the staff. I’ll just have to make sure I’m there before 11am.

It’s yet to be discovered how many other options and how far I will have to travel to find an excellent one in the region.
