Superabundance

It’s been a while. It’s not that I haven’t been eating EB, it’s that I simply haven’t had time to write about them. I’m hoping I’ll be able to catch up soon.

Every month for the last three years I’ve been visiting the same cafe prior to getting a remedial massage for my hip. Of course, I had my hip replaced in March 2022, but I still go so Angus’ Elbow can work his magic on my aging muscles.

It’s welcoming place with a focus on whole foods, allergen awareness, and warmth. The Devil’s Ivy that covers every inch of the ceiling really gives this place it’s atmosphere of friendship and health. Wooden table and bench style seating, with boxes for the cutlery and napkins. Every table offers self-grind salt and pepper. I loathe the narrow-hipped metal seating and often opt for a stool instead, because, frankly, my arse is big and I have sore hips.

It is located one block back from the Kingston Foreshore and under one of the many apartment/trading blocks. Nearby you’ll find a gym, barber, restaurants, florist, physiotherapist, bottle shop (off-licence), and much more.

It wasn’t until a change of menu in the last month that the best of all breakfast foods became available. I was all set to order my regular Latte and toasted banana bread, when I saw it!

From the menu: Giles’ Eggs Benedict. Toasted Three Mills sourdough, wilted spinach, house-made rosti, ham, poached eggs, hollandaise sauce. (DFO, NFO, GF) change ham to smoked salmon or bacon add $3.5

I made no changes, except to my whole food order :)

Anyone that knows me, know I really don’t like acronyms, so here goes. DFO = Dairy Free Option (HOW!?) NFO = Nut Free Option, and GF = Gluten Free.

I’m tempted to order the DFO NFO GF option next time to see how that would go.

When it arrived I could immediately tell two things.

  1. Packet Sauce…
  2. …and too much of it

It looked appetising on the plate and was awash with refreshing colour. This is always a plus. Additionally the sprinkling of paprika and dill fronds livening it up, as the packet sauce as always, leans towards insipid in tone.

I was right, too much sauce. It drowned out the flavour of the ham a d spinach. I’d forgotten the rosti was there until I started removing the second slice of bread. I often remove the second slice, as it almost always too much.

I know how to eat. I’ve lost out on second dates because I’ve had the audacity to eat more than a light salad. However, I’ma putting it out there, rosti and two slices of toast is too much. Pick one. My suggestion, so they stand out from the crowd, especially since they are using PS, is the Rosti. It was delicious. Crisy, delightfully seasoned, and tasty. The little bit I tasted without sauce on it.

The poached eggs were overcooked. That’s all I have to say about that.

Now the coffee. I keep coming back here because the coffee is great. It is always hot, but not overly so. It’s rich and creamy, because I always have full fat, cow juice. I’m not sure which brand of bean they use, but I like it.

Overall, I will go back. Not for the EB, but for the coffee and banana bread. Their coffee makes me stick out my pinkie!
