Twelve Days of ORen: Day 2

It seems to be tough to find an eggs benedict outside of suburbia, so this is another breakfast food review. There’s eggs, toast, and saffron; but no meat or hollandaise sauce.

The combination of the mid-west heat and not even a morsel of bacon left Fe looking very sorry for herself. It’s OK, don’t feel sorry for her. There’ll be chicken in her dinner bowl this evening.

We went for a jaunt to Rylstone after getting up, super early,it’s just a few minutes up the road from Kandos. There wasn’t a single café in Kandos that I could find open, this means that I’ll have to drive for breakfast each day. To be fair not being able to walk far while waiting for my hip replacement means even if there had been an open café I still would have driven. I’m really paying for all the walking I did yesterday. My butt hurts.

The selected café had 4.5 stars on trip advisor. Naturally I would start here. A large open space with rustic tables scattered in the middle with ‘local’ merchandise laden shelves lining the walls. I was to sit outside after ordering. The metal tables and chair where sat in the full sun, so I moved one under the shop awning into the shade. The chair would have burnt me if I wasn’t wearing long trousers. The table was radiating heat.

I was not required to check-in, wear a mask, or show my vaccination certificate. There wasn’t even an option to check-in, and yet the staff where all wearing masks.

I ordered a bottle of sparkling water, a regular latte, and Egyptian Eggs.

I had no idea what Egyptian Eggs were either…but I was about to find out.

The water arrived first, in a glass.

A few minutes later the coffee arrived. “We’re still using takeaway cups, you know, ’cause of CoVid”. She then proceeded to put it down next to the glass and stainless steel cutlery.

I think a small part of my brain exploded at the daftness of this. The fork is literally going to go into my mouth. The glass is reusable and washable and will be touched to my lips on multiple occasions…why would a coffee cup be spared the potential of being a spreader?

I was unable to say anything. Mainly because I know you NEVER know what will happen in the kitchen if you question anything in a restaurant or café. I stayed silent at the totally illogical reasoning.

My food arrived. It looked really pretty and smelled lovely. Two thin slices of toasted sourdough, hummus spread like jam, fried eggs (done in a ring), and a metric sh*t tonne of saffron infused dukkah. Plus a side-salad…on a breakfast.

Now I know what Egyptian Eggs are…and they are rather tasty.

If I was cooking this dish, I would have had the eggs runnier and put on a little less dukkah. I breathed in at the same time as put some in my mouth at one point and the fine dust coated the back of my throat. That wasn’t fun.

However listening to the woman speaking loudly into her phone a few feet away from me was fun and yielded this gem;

“I was wearing a baggy pair of jeans yesterday, it was so hot, they must have bunched up under me on the saddle, they rubbed a hole clean into my arse.”

Rylstone is pretty, the locals are friendly and I look forward to trying out a few more of the cafes.

Fe and I went for a stroll along the high street. We helped support local traders before heading back to Kandos.

When we got back to Kandos we scattered a few of ORen’s ashes around the tree in the back garden. Last time we stayed here, ORen spent quite a bit of time hanging out there. It seems fitting she would spend more time there on this visit.
